Incredible Value

Earlier this week, someone paid a lot of money for a pair of shoes. And when I say a lot of money—I mean A LOT of money. $560,000 to be exact. Sometimes I like to translate money into terms that are easier to understand. For that same amount of money, you could buy 162,000 double double cheeseburgers from in n out or 70,000 burritos from chipotle.  Crazy right?

So what was so special about these shoes that someone was willing to pay that much money?

Well, they were worn and signed by Michael Jordan, one of the greatest basketball stars to ever play the game. Now, if I were to offer to sell you some shoes I worn 25 years ago, how much would you be willing to pay? A dollar? 25 cents? Ok you’re right… I’d probably have to pay you to take that trash off my hands. So what’s the difference between Micahael Jordan’s and me? The obvious difference is that I’m just some dude in Bakersfield, but Michael Jordan is among the greatest and most successful athletes of all time. His greatness rubs off on even his sweaty shoes, and people are willing to pay big bucks because the shoes were in the presence of greatness.

Life is pretty good at making us feel like old shoes sometimes. Dirty, broken down, worthless. But the Bible gives us a powerful reminder that you are priceless, because you are formed by the very hand of God.

Isaiah 43:1, But now, this is what the Lord says— he who created you, Jacob, he who formed you, Israel: “Do not fear, for I have redeemed you; I have summoned you by name; you are mine.”

These words—Created and Formed, are the words the Bible uses in Genesis 1 and 2 when God creates the Heavens and the Earth, and then forms the first man from the dust of the ground. All of the power and personal touch and care that went in to God creating the world, went in to creating you as well. The word formed describes a potter molding clay by hand into a masterpiece with incredible value.

The fact that we are created by God, in the image of God, the fact that God summons us by name, claims us as his own—that means that we are in the presence of God’s greatness and power every day. If you are a believe in Jesus, you have the Holy Spirit living inside you. How can anything with the very presence of God in it ever be considered worthless? Useless? Broken down?

It’s often said that the true value of an object is whatever a person is willing to pay for it. Someone saw Michael Jordan’s shoes and thought, I have to have them… even if it costs half a million dollars. God saw you and thought, I have to save them… even if it costs me my son. Your value doesn’t come from what you accomplish, how much you can earn, or how many instagram followers you have. Your value comes from the God who created you, formed you, and sent his son to die for you.
